This project has gone through a lot of wild storms since its first appearance around 2007. Back then the idea was to create an online screensaver for the NOKIA N800 and N810 devices, who were the first devices that offered more than standard PDA's like the ones from Blackberry or Dell. The project was registered under www.mojocafe.net and the widgets that the users could choose from were called "mojos".
The most important part being that the MAEMO OS system these devices worked on, offered plenty of possibilities to create widgets, tools and programs.
The clock tool the NOKIA N8xx devices came with, was beautiful but simple. As both devices had a web browser that even was capable of playing Adobe Flash files, Carlos Pinto had the idea to create a website that offered dozens if not hundreds of cool clock designs made with Adobe Flash. The whole idea gained so much attention that Carlos started to adapt to a new device: The SONY PSP.
The problem with all devices was that certain clock designs needed so much power that it drained the devices battery within 20 minutes. Definitely not good enough when you try to create some kind of nightstand clock.
By the end of 2014, there were several options to use the mojocafe.net project with, mainly focused on the NOKIA devices and the PSP. But Android was already on the market for over 5 years and worked flawlessly. There was a Firefox Extension, Chrome Browser Extension and at one point even an Android app containing all of the available mojos inside. It even worked on the first Android television systems.
That was the point were Carlos realized that, thou there were hundreds of mojo-designs, that quantity never beats quality. There were dozens of clocks simply offering a background image taken from Unsplash or Pexels together with the current time. Absolutely boring. Keeping up with the dozens of photos released on a daily base, it was clear that the project would fail soon. Carlos paused the project, but not before giving it a new name: seemiyah.
In the first phase of seemiyah, the whole project switched to a more professional "digital-signage" system. It was way more beautiful than other open source systems for the same target group of that time, but those system were and are way better than anything out there. It is hard to compete against these, though their goals are different. After a short time, Carlos paused the project again.
In 2025 the whole project was totally rescripted. All available extensions and the Android solutions were deleted and are not available anymore. The idea is to go back to the roots and offer what Seemiyah was intended to: to be a clock or information tool in a beautiful way. Today there are more than a hand full of portable devices that are powerful enough to work with seemiyah without a problem. And there are many new creative ideas for clock, calendar and animation layouts that want to be developed.
